As you collect more and more songs an iPad is a useful piece of tech to store your songs on. You can download PDF songbooks and search for them easily. An iPad holder will enable you to fix the iPad to your music stand. Never forget your music again!
  • This tuner is pretty robust and easy to use. It has the added bonus of being able to tune chromatically or for specific instruments – I use guitar, bass and ukulele (C and D) but it also does violin. I changed the battery in mine after about 6 months – typically these type of gadgets benefit from having a quality battery.

The DigiTech FS3X Foot Controller is useful when used with my DigiTech TRIO Plus. You get much more control with a footswitch when practicing or playing live. It's not expensive, so just buy it – you won't regret it!

As a guitarist I enjoy playing along to backing tracks but that is limited to what's available so the Digitech Trio answers that by enabling you to create your own backing with bass and drums. This one also has a looper so you can really get creative. Just play your backing chords, choose your genre/style and the machine does the rest! Headphones compatible! I would recommend buying the Digitech FS3X Foot Controller to control it.
  • I use this Ditto looper mainly at home for practicing. You can have a lot of fun with 5 minutes of looping time and unlimited overdubs. With the Ditto Looper X2 you can play loops in reverse, half-speed or both at the same time. You can use it live too with a bit of practice. If you are looking for a looper then this is the one in my opinion. There is a cheaper model available if it's not in your budget.

Fast Fret is a good lubricant for your strings – better than a spray I'd say – less messy. It helps your fingers glide over the strings too. I've been maintaining my strings using Fast Fret for years and it works for me – I have strings over 20 years old which still deliver excellent tone thanks in part to good maintenance. Every guitarist should have a tin!
  • How much? I hear you scream! This strap is the only one you'll need if you play a Les Paul or similar heavy guitar. It's seriously comfortable, well made and makes your Les Paul much more manageable. So treat yourself or get it as a present (I did!). I highly recommend this strap.

When it comes to picks I've tried so many different ones – thick, thin, rough, smooth, triangular, round etc etc. So when I say that I recommend Herco you can be sure I have many I can compare it against. The Herco Flex 50 is certainly my favourite – it's easy to grip and it's just the right thickness for me. Give them a try!

These are really good straps. I was given a black one as a birthday present and as soon as I held it you could tell the quality was good. Even better when I put it on my Ovation Balladeer acoustic guitar, it's really comfortable with the padding. These guitar straps are perfect for acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitars, semi-acoustic guitars etc.

I've been using Rotosound strings for years and highly recommend them. I in fact have a set of strings on my Les Paul which are over 20 years old. I'd pretty much agree with all the bullet points and say give them a try!

A very nice tuner and useful metronome. I'd seen these tuners were good quality since a lot of our ukulele players had them. I've got one for Christmas and I'm very happy with it. The quality is good and the tuning accurate. The metronome is a useful addition but not an essential feature.
  • An tablet music stand is an essential item if you want to use an iPad, Galaxy tablet or similar. It give a good stable place to present your iPad to read music. Another good accessory to add to this if you are using it with a ukulele would be the ukulele clamp hanger.
